Back on January 8th I woke up to a few hundred unread text messages from friends, family and strangers. Our house burned down at 4:42a that morning. All expressed support to our family, and every single one asked how they could help.
Looking out a north-facing, 11th floor window at the LAX Westin, we could see vibrant flames feeding the smoke covering the 11 miles of sky between us and the Palisades. In the days ahead, my wife and I would alternate between retreating to the hotel room closet to get relief from that view out the window…but we hadn’t yet found the refuges-inside-refuges.
At this point in the experience, I didn’t know what we needed. Moreover, I didn’t know how to ask for help without feeling a blow to my ego. I hadn’t yet realized that accepting help would cut me even more than asking for help.
What I did know: a group of moms from my kids’ grade school years were the most competent humans in our Los Angeles lives. They knew us better and differently from anyone else in the area. They had seen my family at its best and most messy. And I trusted that they loved my family.
Kate Jerkens drove over to the hotel that afternoon with her laptop. She organized a GoFundMe for my family and gave me language to use in directing anyone reaching out over to her. Her husband, Allen, covered off on the logistical challenge of an incredibly active family of kids. Over the next 2.5 months Kate and her family have maintained a steadfast, loving and understanding support for our family. Despite my best efforts, the US Postal Service still thinks we live at their home.
I’ll write more about Kate, Jacqui, Beth and Nathalie for what they did for me and my family. And about their husbands and kids.
We were overwhelmed at the support that came in through Kate’s efforts, and tried to provide updates to everyone that took an interest in our crew.
I copy below the series of messages that were sent out on a regular basis, with the most recent one up top and gradually descending back into January. At some point we’ll also post the video updates I sent to family over this same period of time - some of these are ROUGH, some are pretending not to be rough!
March 27
I hope this finds everyone headed into a wonderful Friday and weekend.
Many have shared that these updates have been good to receive…so here’s one for late March.
We’re 11 weeks and 2 days out from the fires. Maria just completed 10 weeks on Zoom for school. And we’ve been in a consistent rental for the last 2 months.
Overall we’re doing well. Each of us is experiencing what feels like a frequency wave of emotions that adjust on a daily basis, sometimes aligned, sometimes grooving in opposite directions. Grief manifests differently for the four of us. And we’re pretty sure Luna has had some good days and tougher days. But fortunately we’ve had a bunch of joy as well.
I’ve run into a number of people that contributed to this GoFundMe campaign. Sometimes I remember; other times I either forgot or didn’t know of your generosity. My hope is that everyone receiving this message realizes how grateful we are.
Building from the writing I did for these updates, I’ve leaned into telling stories of kindness and generosity we’ve encountered over on Substack. We’ve heard a ton about resilience in the last months…buildings, infrastructure, communities, policies. The more I think about the concept, the more I’m convinced that long term resilience needs to have kindness and generosity - without expectations for reciprocation - at its core.
Family updates:
Aidan continues his studies at Santa Monica College, doing really well in his classes and finding that a bunch of old friends from elementary and high school have joined him at the school. He cooked a big dinner in his casita for 4 of his best friends from back in 8th grade - nutty to see these young men that replaced the little boys we remembered. He has resumed racing, placing a strong 10th place last weekend at a crit in a very hot mountain town north of LA. Check out the amazing head shot that was taken with the new team. Nutrition, meal prep, calorie counting…he keeps layering on stuff to accompany the physical training. Big news: he decided to transfer to a college in Illinois later this summer - he’ll be living in the house I grew up in and working for his aunt building custom homes.
Maria has another few weeks on Zoom before Pali returns in person at a retrofitted Sears building in Santa Monica. She and her classmates completed the design of the 2025 yearbook - an amazing accomplishment any year, and more so this one. She is moving into leadership positions in clubs - just finished giving a bunch of interviews for things rather than being on the receiving end. Soccer moved immediately from high school back to club and she’s back at the crossfit gym regularly. Preparing for college is a central focus - and she’ll be headed to the Boston area with her aunt - and Aidan’s future boss - over Spring Break.
Nina’s work at CORE has required a significant amount of … resilience … as her colleagues worked 24/7 for months following the fires. The funding and policy environment nationally impacted the organization. The need for their work continues and the stakes are clearly present. She has done a pretty amazing job working to balance self care and healing with a calling to support her co-workers. Nina also continues speaking on panels and at events - HERE’s a wonderful panel she did with the head of the CA Community Foundation and other leaders: https://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/what-alliances-do-we-need-in-perilous-times/
I’ve kept busy at SidePorch, working with a growing cohort of pretty amazing colleagues. We were asked to organize the Resilience and Rebuilding day for LA Climate Week, which gives us the chance to assemble topics and presenters to explore what we learned and where we’re going. If you’re in LA (or want to come out!) on April 11, here's an invite to join us: https://lu.ma/r6zjzp5g. Alongside work, looks like there will be a new podcast launched on the 11th offering conversations with the stories I’ve been writing about on the Substack (seanknierim.substack.com). I’m trying to keep active - focusing more on shorter Crossfit workouts rather than the longer bike rides. And my brain settled enough to finish two novels, one a gift from a friend and the other a gift from a local bookstore. Oh yeah, and the second half of my new tattoo will be completed on April 1 (will hold a pic for the next update!)
Maria and I reflected this week on our relationship with the future. We each found ourselves hungering for the ability to predict accurately what would happen. And now we’re so very aware that whatever belief we once held in our ability to predict the future has been stripped away. It’s tough not knowing how things will turn out, if we’ll get to rent this house after July or need a new place, where (not if!) Maria will go to school after next year, if the Cubs will make the playoffs in 2025.
Of course, all we ever had was the one moment in which we inhabit. We have a choice for how to engage with the future and the past. Amazingly, this didn’t change with the fires - we just have a chance to appreciate it in a different way.
Similarly, these fires helped us realize how blessed we are to be part of a community that would show up for us the way y’all did over the last months. This GoFundMe provided a bridge we’re still using while grappling with insurance companies. Your continued outreach means a great deal as we settle into this long slog of recovery and rebuilding…and resilience.
March 5
We wanted to share one more note of gratitude along with an update to the list of friends that supported us over the last 2 months.
The generosity you provided helped us gain stability early in this experience, enabling us to bridge to our insurance coming (slowly) together.
As important as the financial support, knowing that we had a community of people that cared like this made a profound difference. This has been a pretty lonely journey in some ways, and your kindness helped in ways we don't fully understand yet.
We've closed the GoFundMe campaign and I'll be moving my updates over to
https://seanknierim.substack.com.
The main focus of my writing in the coming months will be telling stories of generosity and kindness we encountered over the last weeks. Please subscribe if you're interested - and let me know what you think.
I've uploaded a few pictures from the last weeks, including a visit we had from my sister Kelly - family back in IL wanted to get an in-person view of us in CA to make sure we're holding things together. You'll also see Aidan playing in the Chicago snow and Nina at a fundraiser a local restaurant threw for CORE. And a view of the quilt my aunt sent us that she made for my uncle who passed away last year. And finally, a picture from a dinner we hosted at our new place to start saying thank you to those that really showed up for us. I hope we'll get the chance to welcome many of you receiving this in the months ahead.
Nina continues to be invited to tell her story and engage with leaders focused on recovering from this and other disasters. We'll share information on upcoming events and send out links to these discussions mainly through our LinkedIn accounts.
Maria is cruising along in her junior year, with Pali on zoom until later in March when they'll move into a repurposed building in Santa Monica. Her HS soccer team made it to the LA city quarterfinals - and Maria made an important block in the semifinal PKs. She was named second team all city last night.
Aidan has focused the last weeks on preparing to re-join the race season in cycling while doing great in his full semester of coursework towards his business degree. He has reconnected with a great group of friends from elementary and high school that are all young-adulting, and has been hosting dinners in his casita.
I'm leaning into SidePorch, building up a set of efforts focused on rebuilding and resilience alongside all the other stuff we typically have going. The writing and storytelling prompted by the fires has me exercising a part of my creative brain that I'm enjoying. There's an emerging cohort of friends/colleagues lining up to work together, and that has supported me and my fire-brain. I'm blessed to be working on things that matter with people I love.
Thank you again for your support. Truly.
Abrazos,
Sean, Nina, Aidan, Maria & Luna
February 13
Good morning from a rainy Los Angeles. This is an update on our family, and marks a transition for how we’ll keep folks updated on how we’re doing.
Our family continues to stabilize in this beautiful home in Venice. We feel blessed to have a place to call home for the next months as the healing and rebuilding move forward.
Maria continues school over Zoom and we expect Pali to be back in person in the next month. Her HS soccer team remains undefeated post-fires - they have their last league games tomorrow & Saturday and will begin playoffs next week. Aidan begins his new semester at Santa Monica College next week and will resume his race season as well. He is assembling a new track bike thanks to the generosity of the community that leaned in specifically to support him. He also got to assemble a bed and IKEA wardrobe - his was the only unfurnished room we have rented, and Aidan enjoyed creating a living space for himself.
Nina is currently speaking on a panel for a disaster philanthropy conference…and speaks tomorrow at an energy conference at UCLA…and again at a public forum with leaders in community philanthropy across LA. Her voice and her work have taken on a new resonance over the last weeks. She will head back to work at CORE after a few weeks focusing on our family’s situation.
I’ve been leaning back into work at SidePorch over the past weeks, grateful for our focus on helping good people doing hard things in service to communities around the world. We’ve been pulled into a few efforts focused on community resilience in the LA area - the lived experience certainly gives us a renewed commitment towards this work.
Thank you again to everyone receiving this message for your generosity over the last six weeks. Your support was critical as we navigated a nutty start to 2025.
The kindness and generosity we’ve encountered these last weeks have been incredible. I’ve captured a range of pictures from people in the community, some of which are included here.
Over the next weeks I’m going to be writing about these encounters, sharing their stories alongside reflections on what we’ve come through as a family. I’ll post these on a new Substack account - check the first posts out and subscribe if you’d like:
I’m also going to add some stuff to Instagram - including my first ever post on the platform that will come later today: https://www.instagram.com/sean.knierim/
We’re going to close the GoFundMe campaign next week. Deep gratitude to Kate Jerkens for setting this up - her family’s consistent support has been incredible.
FEBRUARY 8
Happy Saturday to everyone.
We have now been in our new rental home for a week. It seems absurd that this experience has only lasted a month - we all feel like the fires occurred months ago.
I wanted to share another update from one of the Knierims:
Maria's story inspired a truly amazing effort at Arizona State University to provide a guaranteed pathway to college acceptance to students affected by the fires.
Read the press release here: https://news.asu.edu/20250207-university-news-asu-guarantees-pathways-admission-los-angeles-area-students-impacted-wildfires
Deep gratitude goes to Alan Arkatov and ASU President Michael Crow for leaning in. It is not common that one of the largest universities in the country - with a strong presence in and commitment to LA - would organize within a matter of weeks. I heard a story this morning of students that have already reached out to the university for support.
We're hopeful that other universities will follow ASU's lead and provide some deserved support to kids that are still living through something none of us understand yet. If you have ideas / connections / etc, please reach out to me by text or email.
Maria took her ACT today - collective fingers and toes crossed that she's done with standardized testing for the year.
More coming from us in the next week, including a few opportunities to catch Nina sharing her voice and story this month and next.
Abrazos a todos - and thank you again for caring for us, and others around us.
FEBRUARY 3
Wow, what a month.
Thank you for supporting our family over the last weeks. Kate and Jacqui, a special thanks for organizing this GoFundMe effort and everything else you’ve provided us.
After staying in 10 short-term places since 6-Jan, we moved into a furnished, 6 month rental on Friday. This home offers a place to stabilize and heal, and we’re incredibly fortunate to be here - THANK YOU, Gaby for the introduction to our new landlord. Our new address: 1041 Superba, Venice, CA 90291.
Our family went up to our place in the Palisades on Saturday. HERE is folder of pics and videos in case you want to experience some of this from afar. We recovered some keepsakes on the property, including the comal (tortilla warmer) that Nina had from her mom. We were struck by the quiet up in the hills, by our birds flying around and nature somehow continuing in the face of this disaster. I don’t know if we’ll go back any time soon - it was haunting to journey through the devastation of a place we called home for 8+ years.
Maria:
She continues online school at Pali for the next weeks as the school works to secure an in-person site for classes to meet. She’s in class right now alongside her boyfriend, Luca - his home survived the fires but their family is also displaced for an indeterminate time. Luca’s mom is a teacher at Pali … the commitment and strength of these educators that lost homes but still show up to support their students is inspiring.
Maria takes the ACT on Saturday. Any spare prayers you may have…direct them towards El Camino HS on Saturday morning pacific time!
Her soccer team came back from this disruption with a vengeance. Since the fires, they are 6-0, outsourcing their opponents 53-1. You can follow the season HERE. We have 2 rivalry games against Venice HS coming up on Friday and Wed…come out and seem some great soccer!
Aidan:
He will begin the new semester at SMC next week, so has a few more days to focus on his training for the race season and settling into the new home.
Aidan will be racing this Sunday in Brea, CA, with information HERE in case anyone would want to come out and support him. He will ride at 1:05 and 2:45, and his teammates on the new race team will go out at 2:00.
Aidan has been an amazing partner in the last weeks. His resilience and support were essential to our physical and mental health. I can’t begin to express how much I love and respect this young man.
Luna:
The dog earned her emotional support animal designation over the last month. She seems happiest when with any or all of us. There have been moments of confusion, of running headlong into sliding glass doors in unfamiliar airbnbs, of wondering why her people were going a bit nuts. Luna has been enjoying this new place - and happily trading in mountain lions for squirrels and other dogs in the new neighborhood.
Mountain Lions (plural):
Nina and Luna stayed in a beautiful home in Santa Rosa Valley that friends offered us as a refuge. Late at night Nina took the dog out for a last walk and as they were returning, a mountain lion came out of the bushes 10ft from Nina and screamed/growled. Fortunately Luna had just trotted between Nina and the big cat, and Nina grabbed her and fled in the garage doors.
One week later Aidan and a friend went on a night hike adventure in the mountains east of the Eaton Fire zone. Ahead on a ridge another mountain lion was spotlighted in Aidan’s headlamp. Armed with a 2” knife, the duo backed slowly down the trail towards their car with the animal keeping visible. When they reached the car, multiple sets of glowing eyes appeared - we think this was a mother and a set of near-grown cubs.
The weeks ahead:
We are blessed in many ways, including having Nina’s colleagues at CORE that help us understand what to expect as this experience unfolds. We’re fortunate to be in a secure location. And in some ways the hard work begins this month - grappling with what we just experienced, sorting out what we need to do next, needing to continue our daily work and school lives while adding in layers of emotional, physical and logistical stuff.
Thank you to all that have maintained a connection to us as this unfolded. The next weeks will bring some quiet, and we’re told loneliness. Your support to us in the last weeks helped get us this far…and we’re blessed that your friendship will help us on this nutty journey ahead.

Quick and Exciting Update:
Nina will be on the Today Show tomorrow (Wednesday) around 8:00 AM!
Tune in and we will share the link when we have it!!
January 28th, 2025by Katharine Jerkens, Organizer
The Knierims are going to move into a 6mo rental on Friday! They’ve collectively stayed in 10 different places in the last 3 weeks and are looking forward to having some stability in this beautiful home. The attached picture was taken over the weekend when Nina and Aidan got to see it for the first time. The introduction to the owner of the house came from a friend who sheltered at this property during Covid. Sean shared that it felt like God got down a triage list to the Knierim family when he walked in the gate.
Luckily, this is a fully furnished home so all they needed to do was find a bed and dresser for Aidan. As with so many other things over the last weeks, a locally owned business (Living Spaces) provided help - they gave a mattress set to all who lost a home. This store has been added to a long list of places we will be supporting for the rest of our lives.
Maria continues in school online, joining friends most days to move through classes as they wait to hear where a physical location will open for the kids to return in person. Her soccer team won 4 games in the last week by a combined 32-1. Her jammed finger was cleared by the doc so she has been able to join on the field.
Aidan has another week before his spring semester classes begin at Santa Monica College. He has a solid course load of business focused classes as he moves into his business major concentration. He had his first road race as a Category 3 athlete with the new LaGrange // La Fabrica race team. Aidan finished the 57 mile race north of Santa Barbara with some of the highest sustained power outputs of his life…and came face to face with the fatigue caused by these last weeks. The laughter and camaraderie with his new teammates was good for his and Sean’s souls.
Maria’s boyfriend, Luca, brought the family an incredible gift this week: Luca’s home made it through the fires…and when they went up to grab some stuff he stopped at the Knierim’s old home and brought back a few things that survived the fire. The family plans to go up themselves this week once they sort out protective gear - the city opened up access to the neighborhood.
Nina and Sean are balancing rebuilding their worlds alongside showing up at work. We’ll share some more on this later in the week - neat stuff coming we’ll want to send around to those supporting this family.
Luna continues to be a constant source of love and acceptance.
They send their love and gratitude to everyone that has been along for this ride.
More later this week!
JANUARY 24
We wanted to send an update headed into this weekend to everyone who has been supporting the Knierims.
Team Knierim (Kate, Jacqui and Nathalie) stopped by the Airbnb last night where Sean Aidan and Maria have been staying this week. We had the chance to sit down and reflect on the last few weeks and we heard a consistent sense of gratitude coming from the family for all of the love and the support that they’ve received in the last weeks.
Maria returned to online school and had a good start on Zoom with friends that also have lost their home. Her team resumed their soccer season and won their first game back 10-0. Maria jammed a finger pretty badly this week that is getting it checked out today.
Aidan returned from a very good trip to Tempe and spent the day in Venice today. He will be driving up to Santa Barbara for his first road race of the season tomorrow morning.
Sean and Nina secured a six month lease at a fantastic house. After the family put offers on five different long-term rentals only to see them fall through, a friend connected Sean to a homeowner that wanted to share her property with someone who had lost their home. Sean said that walking into this place he felt like God had moved through the triage list and turned her attention to the family. This is a special place and the Knierims look forward to healing there in the next months.
Nina had a pretty interesting week up in a home that friends open to them in Santa Rosa Valley. Not only did the smoke from the Hughes fire drift over the property, the electric company continually shut off power to prevent additional fires. Late at night when Nina was taking Luna out for a last walk, a mountain lion came out of the bushes and screamed at them! While it’s possible the lion was looking for a midnight snack, we’re choosing to believe that it also was a fire refugee screaming in solidarity with the family!
Nina was interviewed with her boss at CORE on a local radio station…it’s worth a listen: https://sexyboomershow.com/l-a-fires-part-two-a-survivors-loss-and-next-steps/
Finally, Sean has been catching photos of people who have been kind to him and the family over the last few weeks. We share a few images here of people that have helped out this family. We’re all amazed at the continued love and concern that this community is giving each other. At some point it would be neat to get a group picture of everybody that contributed to this GoFundMe to save for years to come.
JANUARY 20
Good Morning!
We wanted to share an update on how things are going for the family. I have attached a few photos to give you a view of these stories.
FYI, Sean and Aidan send brief video updates each morning to family back in the Chicago area. If anyone wants us to share these with you, please let us know, and we’ll send a link to the updates.
For the next 2 weeks, they’re getting creative with logistics. Maria starts her second semester Junior year online this Tuesday. And her soccer season gets back on track Wednesday. They’re going to be opening up the Pali Dolphins team store for the soccer team, giving an opportunity for Pali Dolphins fans everywhere to rock gear from their favorite team.
Aidan has his race season beginning on the 25th in Santa Barbara. He decided to drive to Tempe to continue training in the mountains there - away from the energy in LA. Many of you know that he has used road trips for healing and adventure. He and Nina will retreat up to a home in Santa Rosa Valley (50 miles north of LA) that a dear friend offered (she offered her in-law’s place, and they agreed). It’s remote, beautiful, and surrounded by stunning hills.
The outpouring of love and support continues here in LA. Sean keeps sharing how going out to grab something they need invariably leads to some made-for-the-Hallmark-channel tear-jerker moment. We encourage him to always keep a water bottle with him to rehydrate from gratitude tears.
One example of this extraordinary kindness is when Aidan and Sean were invited to spend time with the parents of Tour-de-France rider, Sean Quinn. The dad heard about Aidan’s loss and wanted to make sure Aidan had what he needed to keep riding towards his season. The Knierims did NOT know this family until a random phone call came in late on Thursday. Not only did Aidan receive some kit from Quinn’s professional team (EF), but he also got this jacket from a pro he looks up to, alongside 2 hours of tips and stories from the parents.
JANUARY 15
Good Morning! The Knierims wanted to extend gratitude for all of your contributions to this fund. Without them, this past week would have been a real challenge, as they navigate a lot of different challenges. So, thank you all!
JANUARY 15
Good Morning Everyone!
An update from the Knierims from last night:
The Knierim’s made it through day 6 of their new lives as Internally Displaced People - what some experts in refugee response told them is a legit term to use.
They secured a one week Airbnb in the Venice area, with support from Airbnb.org. Now they’re turning to finding a longer term rental, a difficult thing in a nutty rental environment in LA.
The Knierims made a firm decision to find a place close to their community here in Los Angeles. They want the kids to stay close to friends, school, and their sport that will be continuing (more on that in a second). They also want us to stress how grateful they are for the love and support being given by so many here in this place they’ve called home for over a decade.
They have had offers from Many on this list to stay in Holmes in eight states in two countries now - we are encouraging them to plan some getaways over the next year to take advantage of some pretty remarkable generosity from their friends.
Since the last update, we wanted to share a note about each one of the kids, who are doing their best to navigate this time.
After his time testing and riding with his new team, Aidan was brought in for a professional bike fit to get his gear ready for the team’s inaugural race in Santa Barbara on January 25. This picture shows how he was hooked up on every one of his joints to have the computer determine how exactly to adjust his bike, which took over two hours to accomplish. We just heard that a separate GoFundMe is being launched by Aidan and Sean’s bike club to help Aidan replace what he lost and help him be ready for what will hopefully be a great season. The Canaras should have some good footage to share with anyone that wants it, Tour de France style on the summit of the mountains out here, of Aidan and his teammates peddling towards the finish line. (Pic of Aidan)
Maria has also kept herself occupied to cope with the stress that we’re experiencing . along with welcoming her boyfriend back to the states, Maria found time to record this podcast, talking about her experience over the last week and the effort that she and many of her friends worked on to provide clothing to others in need: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/weprosper-co_rebuildwithpurpose-youthleadership-weprosper-activity-7284722587492892672-1EbX?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_ios
Mom and dad are focused on solving this crazy rental market, and report that they are still married and in love as we head towards week two.
Luna seems the least affected of the crew, just happy when she has her humans close by - there’s Wizdom and watching how this dog is responding to her own life being disrupted.
Thank you to everyone who continues sending prayers, thoughts, and resources to this family, and others affected.
January 11th, 2025by Katharine Jerkens, Organizer
Lastly, all of these updates come lovingly from Sean, who wants you all to know how grateful all the Knierims are for your outpouring of support. He is doing lots of work behind the scenes and calling on the big guns to help our community right now.
A woman who went to high school with, and has lost everything, so poignantly said it the other day..."With devastation, comes creation." Say what you will about Los Angeles, but this community is rallying right now, and we feel the love. Thank you all so much for your loving kindness.

And, don't forget about Aidan! As we all know, Aidan has found true love and passion with cycling, and has dedicated the better part of the last few years honing his skills and growing as an athlete. He recently joined a new team, and today they were all in velodrome together doing performance benchmarking. As soon as they hopped off their bikes, the U.S. National Track Cycling Team hopped on. Despite losing one his bikes in the fire, Aidan was determined today to get right back to what he loves and has been working so hard for. If you want to look at helping the team as a sponsor, please reach in to the email address we have set up.
January 11th, 2025
The next update is all about Nina! If you don't know, Nina works for CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort). Yesterday, Nina was interviewed by PBS NewsHour, and this will air today at 2PM PST. If you are looking for additional ways to reach out and support, this is an amazing way to support our community, and the work Nina tirelessly does everyday. Tune in today at 2PM PST.

Good morning from Los Angeles. The fires continue to burn, but our hearts are full as we see the support for the Knierims. Thank you all!
I wanted to share some really positive updates here, as we all need some good vibes:
Maria and her friends have started @clothesforpalisades, a clothing drive for those who have lost everything these devastating fires. Yesterday, a surgeon from the Palisades, who had been in a 7-hour surgery when the fires broke out, came in her scrubs (she had been in for over 36 hours) to gt the first clothing she could for her entire family. As the fires raged, she was not able to leave her patient, and thus had no time to grab anything at all. The donations are still coming in, and people will be coming today to pick things up. So proud of Maria and her friends!
If you are local, please consider supporting this drive today.
